Why I want to meet Douglas Hoftstadter

His books have provided important insights into who I am. As I read his works, I really want to sit down with him and talk about some of the implications, how some of my experiences relate, and where I think he’s taken some shortcuts that really don’t compute.

Whenever George calls me on the phone, or I get ahold of him, he is excited to talk to me. It took me a couple of years of working with him to notice his genuine excitement about making contact. I realized that I felt important and special every time we got in touch.

This is a manifestation of his cultivated emotional intelligence (one of the four pillars of anger management). George is a wis and compassionate teacher. He is inspiring and fun to listen to and learn from. I’ve noticed that he lives what he teaches. He is one of my heroes.

During the political insanity of the last decade, I have always been able to count on Amy to provide reporting that others wouldn’t touch. Her integrity is something I do not doubt – even though I’ve not always agreed with her conclusions.

Beyond this, however, she became a radicalizing voice in my head while hitting the gym. The NPR station was blocked by noise, but I could pick up Pacifica without any problem to listen to Democracy Now.

Her Both Sides Now CD brings such wonderful contrast as it shows her evolution as a human being. I love that she’s not trying to be a young maid, that her voice sounds reconciled to maturity and that her youth lives on only in her spirit. Aging with power and grace. I’m very impressed.

Reading a few entries by John Lee really felt good. I got a great vibe. And I admire what he’s working for and his irreverent way of challenging dysfunctional hierarchies!

Julie always reminds me to be creative, to keep moving, to look, to feel, to connect. She encourages me along my path. In her writings I imagine her integrating life and art with grace.

And I’m stoked about the artist/creativity retreats and camps ideas.

She’s an outspoken activist. She played at the conclusion of the first California Aids Ride in 1994 as we came into the finish line. She played for An Inconvenient Truth. Her passion comes through her music. The world is a better place because she’s in it.

She’s witty and complex. She had the courage to be publicly gay and risk her sitcom portraying that. She’s a courageous woman with a strong character – and she’s quite a character.

I admire her and think she’d be great to have as a friend and neighbor.

Why I want to meet Elderbear is following the Still Small Voice

I want to meet Elderbear because I like his goals. Especially the goal about cherishing his wife. I like the honesty in his writing and his apparent ability to communicate. I hate the “Real men do not talk” attitude. Real men are smart enough to know life is short and communicating makes it richer. I find his online personna very approachable and his real-life personna is likely to be so too.

She inspires me to achieve my goals by working towards hers.
